Ufology’s Insane Asylum: UFO UpDates

The pathology inherent to or study of UFOs is rampant and overt at an internet place that designates itself as The List: Errol Bruce-Knapp’s UFO UpDates.

ebk.jpg

A cursory glance at the postings on UpDates provides evidence of a psychopathology that is substantiated by a perusal of such dolts as Jerry Clark, Don Ledger, Stanton Friedman, and especially the sour and intellectually misguided Alfred Lehmberg.

Recently, sensible and coherent thinkers such as Britain’s David Clarke and the eminent Jeff Ritzmann have departed UpDates, realizing that the venue now contains a gaggle of very mentally-sick persons, who are spouting jeremiads about the Alien Abduction brouhaha that Paratopia started by its anti-Hopkins revelations of Carol Rainey, Hopkins’ ex-wife and colleague, and the Jacobs/Emma Woods imbroglio that has captured the noses of ufological morons and idiots who haven’t a clue as to what malfeasance is or perverse bias is on their part or others,

UpDates is the last refuge of the ufological residue that has been marginalized by UFO newbies and true intellectuals, who refuse to habituate the site.

The scandalous asides of The Listers is grist for psychoanalytic study, if one wants to examine minds that have gone off the deep end of sanity.

The once scholarly UFO historian Jerry Clark has descended into a state of Libyan-like autocracy, where he thinks he’s the sole-arbiter of what is germane about UFOs and what isn’t.

Don Ledger is just dumb, and grammatically lax.

Freidman is defensive and self-aggrandizing.

Lehmberg is egregiously loopy, ruining the English language with his grammatical faux pas and incoherent ramblings.

Bruce-Knapp likes the idea of having a lot of material in his UpDate archives, and encourages postings of every kind. He’s the asylum’s wayward director who should have retired a few years ago, before senility hit him square in the head.

There are others, too many to name here, who complete the inventory of psychopaths who once were atop the ufological list of responsible UFO mavens but who now make up the raft of silly persons that time has made irrelevant and rationality has subverted.

UpDates is the list alright – but the list of UFO nuts and crazies.

  • Oh dear! It sounds as if you are not fond of UFO Updates. I was once a member but had to abandon it two years ago, not because of the quality of the writings therein, but due to persistent login problems which meant I was not getting value for my subscription. There are always a wide variety of contributors to these forums, and not just to the Updates. I have not read anything there lately so do not know what has been said about Hopkins & Jacobs, both of whom have their dedicated followers (probably fewer than they once had), and their dedicated opponents. I cannot stand abductology anyway. And yes, some people love their rhetoric, their command of the language, their phraseology and so on. That's ufology, isn't it? Actually it is not just ufology; it can apply to any controversial subject.

  • I'm not a fan of Clarke's at all. I think he's beneath sleaze and the fact he's a university lecturer on journalism is downright disturbing.

  • Yes, I've noticed the entries of Jerome Clark on UFO Updates. Awfully disappointing, considering he's suppose to be an historian of ufology. Instead he's turned into quite the list's viscious fishie of an apologist for Hopkins and Jacobs. Yikes!

  • Brownie:

Some think we are too harsh or too obsessed with UpDates, but its is disappointing to see someone we've always admired -- Jerry Clark -- turn into a sniping, petty person who doesn't realize how sexist he is.

He's gone after Carol Rainey and "Emma Woods" viciously, but doesn't have anything to say to Alfred Lehmberg who has been a vibrant defender of both, and a vocal critic of Jacobs particularly.

Mr. Clark picks on women but is afraid of ufology's bully it seems.

  • RR, Yes odd isn't it that Clark won't take on Lehmberg! I do think that if Clark tried, he'd have his ego served to him by Lehmberg.

I have mixed feelings about Lehmberg. He can be frankly viscious and hard to understand (those ching/chow type essays on ufo magazine squarespace blog - I dunno) and writings elsewhere too.

But, in this particular case regarding 'Woods' and Rainey, he's on the right side of history and posting alot of common sense. Also, I've never detected misogyny in any of his writings.

Clarke, on the other hand, is sticking up for his buddies come hell or high water. And he's defending the status quo of abductionlogy. One of many examples - how he could have written a week or so ago on UFO Updates that he'd never seen Hopkins lead a witness or anything questionable about any of his (Hopkins) investigations and case studies is astounding.

Way back when the Hopkins book - Witnessed: The Brooklyn Bridge Abduction - was investigated independently and soundly debunked, Clarke was screaming foul, defending Hopkins and attacking those who were independently investigating the case.

Clarke hasn't changed in this behavior. Sadly, this calls into question Clarke's own work in the field, imo.

Lehmberg can be abstruse but in the matter of Woods/Jacobs and Rainey/Hopkins, he has been a vicious gentleman, taking on those who would set aside Ms. Woods or Carol Rainey because they are women.

Clark has been a real ass in the matter, supporting his buddies like a mafia figure, even knowing they may have done wrong.

Clark is afraid of Lehmberg, but Lehmberg won't go after Clark either, as Alfred sucks up to the UFO biggies.

  • I like UFO Updates but agree that the recent discussion has been enbarrassing. On top of the sexism, we get a lot of "Budd and David are such nice guys" -- anything to evade the blatant fraud of these two abduction investigators.

  • Bruce-Knapp has to be given credit for presenting all sides of the Hopkins/Jacobs/Rainey/Woods debate, but allowing some of the blatant sexist attacks on the women involved is, as you say, enbarrassing.

RR, I initially read this days ago and it came back to my mind a few times, so I returned to re-read it.

I think I get what you mean! I didn't at first, perhaps because I was just so relieved there were men
who seemed of good conscience fighting this
fight against the blatant sexism in the Woods/Rainey vs. Jacobs/Hopkins sh**storm.

With Lehmberg it may be a case of doing the right thing for the wrong reason. And taking care not step on the toes of the ufology biggies like Clarke (who is still bitching as of 3/13, on the UFO Updates List about Rainey and Woods even though
the owner proclaimed that discussion was closed over a week ago).

I'm quite surprised that Bruce-Knapp doesn't edit out the sexist posts.

I can't imagine him allowing a racist or anti-semitic post to stand.

  • Susan:

Bruce-Knapp indicated, as you note, that the Hopkins/Rainey and Jacobs debate was being shut down, but it still goes on, as List visitors can see.

    Lehmberg is ufology's bully.

He defends Emma Woods and attacks those who attack her, but you are perspicacious: he's doing so for the wrong reasons.

Clark has become a condescending old lady at UpDates, an embarrassment to his past good work.
