Wilhelm Reich and Roswell

Copyright 2013, InterAmerica, Inc.

Nick Redfern in his latest book, For Nobody’s Eyes Only (reviewed here October 17) notes in Chapter 5: UFO Dossiers Denied and Disappeared the deletion or destruction of the FBI files on psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, who was investigating his idea of “a strange and eerie life force, a kind of primordial cosmic energy.” [Page 55]

Nick, on Page 56, reminds readers that Dr. Reich was in Roswell in 1955, but Nick goes on to write that Reich could not have known anything about the so-called Roswell incident of 1947, as “the Roswell link to UFOs was not on anyone’s radar – the events of 1947 having long been forgotten by those who got briefly excited by the press release suggesting a UFO had crashed on the Foster Ranch.”

I consider this a rare lapse on Nick’s part, and his friend, Greg Bishop, who is a Reichian devotee of sorts, and referred to by Nick in connection with Reich and the loss of the FBI files.

Colin Wilson’s critical biography of Reich, The Quest for Wilhelm Reich [Anchor Press/Doubleday, Garden City, NY, 1981] cites, in Chapter Eight that Reich was interested in the Roswell area in the 1940s and particularly 1947 because of his concern about radiation poisoning – Roswell was the hub, as you know, of the atomic bomb aircraft that delivered the lethal bombs upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Reich concluded that radium and radiation poisoning was exacerbated by the orgone energy that propelled or was expelled by flying saucers.

And Reich’s interest in flying saucers wasn’t just instigated by Kenneth Arnold’s iconic 1947 sighting. Reich was intrigued by Keyhoe’s books but, more importantly, by the report in Nicholas Roerich’s 1930 book, Altai-Himalaya wherein Roerich (a Russian painter and archaeologist) “describes, looking in the sky at an eagle … seeing ‘in a direction from north to south, something big and shiny reflecting the sun, like a huge oval moving at great speed … we even had time to take our field glasses and saw quite distinctly an oval form with a shiny surface.’” [Wilson, Page 236]

In the now missing FBI documents on Reich, one would find reference to the Roswell 1947 incident.

The files were online, Nick notes, for eight years, 1999 to 2007.

That someone downloaded that material is grist for the ill-named and ongoing Roswell Dream Team.

Reich, I contend, from the Wilson insights and that of W. Edward Mann, in his book Orgone, Reich, & Eros: Wilhelm Reich’s Theory of Life Energy [Simon and Schuster, NY, 1973] that Reich heard of and knew about the alleged flying saucer crash near Roswell, and his trip through Roswell and work in the area in the 1950s derives from that knowledge.

The missing files, if located (from their online presence) will confirm the Reich/Roswell connection.

  • Rich:

Yes, it's a well-known fact that Reich was fascinated by UFOs - I specifically note that in the book in relation to his Orgone Energy experiments.

Yes, he was fascinated too by radiation and this may have tied in with Roswell and the 509th.

But here's the important thing: if Reich knew of (or remembered) the Roswell UFO event (or alleged UFO event!) then why not simply say so in his writings?

He talked openly (and wrote) about deadly Orgone energy during his visit thru Roswell, so why not mention the crash too?

That was my reasoning for concluding that Reich (although having an awareness of the Orgone/Roswell angle) didn't know the crash story - he never, ever referred to it.

And if he DID know of the crash, it's inconceivable he wouldn't have referred to it, as it would have actually bolstered his theories and beliefs.

I note in the book that his file was removed (not destroyed) from the FBI's website for a lack of interest in terms of how many (or lack of) people were downloading the file in the 2000s - not many.

  • Nick...

I won't bring up that "absence of evidence..." canard, but I think Reich wouldn't be distracted by the essence of the Roswell incident (the supposed crash), concentrating in his obsession, which was radiation poisoning and the Orgone.

He was a scientist, and focused on his interested area, which was the energy, not the aliens per se.

But one should scour the FBI files, wherein there may be a Roswell reference...indirect or otherwise.

  • I covered Reich in 2010 in a piece entitled "Roswell Crash Talk Before All the Hoopla."

Reich's 1957 Roswell recounting of events in 1955 where he sensed "an imbalance of UFO energies" over the area is very intriguing:

Dr. Wilhelm Reich was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who worked closely with Sigmund Freud. Known for his development of radical theories that related to a "life energy" that he referred to as "orgone energy," Reich was also very interested in the subject of extraterrestrial life and UFOs. Reich died in 1957, but his last book, published in the last year of his life, refers to Roswell and UFOs.

In 1957's "Contact With Space" Reich recounts a 1955 trip to Tucson, AZ to conduct "weather and energy experimentation" using a device that he designed and called a "cloudbuster" along with other devices made to attract UFOs. On his way to Tucson, he relates that he "felt compelled" to stop at a small town called Roswell, NM. Reich decided to make "field observations" there at Roswell. In the 1957 book, Reich makes specific (albeit brief) mention of what he called the Roswell area's "strange imbalance" of what he believed were "UFO energies" related to forces he called "DOR/OR."

Reich was known to conduct such unusual experimentation in geographic areas that he felt held special meaning and that were relevant to his UFO study."

  • Thanks, Chainofthesea..

But I see that the files from 1945 until 1951 are missing, which points up Nick's concern and citation in his new book.

(I have a request out to others who may have grabbed the online files before they were expurgated.)

By Blogger RRRGroup, at Tuesday, October 22, 2013

  • OK these seem to relate to the period in question

With more of a complete list

    Hope these help.

  • Thanks, Chain...

    You are a gem.

  • Hi Rich (and Nick + others),

I got your message asking about copies of the FBI's Reich files that used to be on the FBI website. I've previously uploaded them (with the FBI's previous file names, i.e. Reich1 to Reich6) to a folder at:

Just let me know if you want anything else.

By the way, I wrote about the subject of FBI files relating to ufology that are (or were) available online and offline a while ago at:

(I've obtained a few further files since then and seen references suggesting a few more, so I probably should update that discussion - when I get some free time...)

    All the best,

  • Thanks, Isaac...

You are a fount of information, always.

  • That's cool to read some of you and speculations about "Wilhem Reich and Roswell". I appreciated the sources shared here. But Wake up, guys!

Please, do you have evidences, historiographical evidences, showing a link between Reich and the Roswell myth/story stricto sensu as delivered by the mythmakers?
I mean a direct one regarding what the mythtmakers told us. Nada ? So, that's again ufology and her level of evidence(s)?

Hoo, "life energy", "orgone energy", "using a device that he designed and called a "cloudbuster", "UFO energies". Interesting lexicons and vocabulary.

I'm impressed by such terms: sounds very scientific and scientific instruments!

If Tony Bragalia should develop such instruments, designs and methods, it could be very interresting in the name of Science and the message for Humankind the ufologists are delivering... (sarcasms inside).

By Blogger Gilles Fernandez, at Tuesday, October 22, 2013

  • Gilles.

Some of us just admire Reich because he was brilliantly innovative.

I told Tony that Reich misnamed his energy (Orgone) which waylaid it as a serious topic among colleagues.

As for Roswell, we only think he knew about the mini-dust-up that occurred there in July of 1947.

As to whether he considered it significant is moot: Nick thinks Reich didn't know about the Roswell incident since he never mentioned it (as far as we know) while I think he did know about it as he was attuned to what was going on flying saucer-wise in the time-frame, especially as far as what was going on around the Roswell area.

All that aside, I find Reich to be highly original as a thinker, and he was a Freudian, so what more can one ask?

His Character Analysis is a must for those who want to understand people behavior.

One should also read his book on Fascism and his views on Jesus.

By Blogger RRRGroup, at Tuesday, October 22, 2013

  • Rich,

I appreciated Nick staements and I'm modestly closed to him about this pseudo-link.

I dont dismiss Reich was innovative (or not).

I only pointed "you" to document, to provide the designs, instruments and methods which transpires among his narrative I quoted above (and show us how they are "scientific"

Demonstrate "me" (or readers) such instruments are scientificaly valid, or existing and used by Science(s). That's all.

Your friend Bragalia released a thread after all and mentionning such narratives where such pseudo instruments and notions are taking place in the narratives...

That's clear after all and despite my Broken English... No?

Hoo, and now a Freudian as an argument of credibility of person! I ignored Freud is so much considered by you, Rich. ;) Wake up again!

By Blogger Gilles Fernandez, at Tuesday, October 22, 2013

  • But Gilles,

Everything IS sexual n'est ce pas?

Freud was and is soooo right that it hurts.

By Blogger RRRGroup, at Tuesday, October 22, 2013

  • Cool then! Your country exported in our owns the UFO myth. Old Europe, the Freudian myth.
    Sort of draw, then ;)

By Blogger Gilles Fernandez, at Tuesday, October 22, 2013

  • Hahahaha...so true.

By Blogger RRRGroup, at Tuesday, October 22, 2013

  • A question not related to the subject.

Can someone give the complete address of the "UFO updates" website?

I found a few with the word update in their name, but I don't know which is the "official".

"Roswell and Reich : (Or Gone But not Forgotten)"

    ...is a good start???

  • Cute, KP....just cute.

By Blogger RRRGroup, at Tuesday, October 22, 2013

  • In Myron Sharaf's definitive biography of Reich, "Fury on Earth", he does mention Reich's UFO interest and how Reich was influenced in this regard by Keyhoe (interestingly Sharaf points out with what he calls the benefit of hindsight, that Reich was mistaken in his taking the ETH hypothesis seriously here, but admits a mystery to the UFO phenomenon as a whole). No mention of Roswell if I remember right, as you would expect. Sharaf knew Reich well himself, he was a colleague in the States.

I agree with Redfern's take here, he is going with the evidence we have.
