JFK Assassination Article: Primer for Roswell

Adam Gopnik, one of our favorite New Yorker writers/reporters, has a piece in the November issue of the magazine, Closer Than That: The assassination of J.F.K., fifty years later [Page 100 ff].

While the article is strictly about JFK’s murder, Mr. Gopnik makes salient points that may illumine the Roswell incident, for skeptics and believers alike.

A connecting thread about patterns in the JFK theories (conspiratorial and “authoritative”), patterns that seem to co-habit views of Bruce Duensing, a regular at this blog.

Writing about a compulsive “hyperperspicacity” JFK assassination researcher, Gopnik says that the motif of the time [1963] caused the researcher to look harder for pattern than the thing looked at will ever provide. [Page 102]

“But there are ways in which the pattern-seeking is a meaningful index of the event, and gives us more insight into its hold fifty years on than the evidence does.” [Page 102]

“The pattern-weaving and unweaving in front of our eyes, [places] unlikely people in near proximity and then removing them again – is its own point.” [Page 107]

“Where the proceduralists believe that the truth is in there, buried in some forgotten file folder, the fantasists believe, ‘X Files’ style, the truth is out there…” [Page 104]

“It is … possible to construct an intricate scenario that is both cautiously inferential, richly detailed, on its own terms, and yet utterly delusional.” [Page 104, Italics mine]

“The [Roswell] conspiracy theorists are the first and hardiest of those movements … in which the old American paranoid style, once largely marginal and murmuring, married pseudoscience and became articulate, academic, systemized, and loud.” [Page 204, I replaced Roswell for JFK in the sentence.]

“No matter how improbable it may seem that all the hard evidence could have been planted, faked, or coerced – and the hundreds of the distinct acts of concealment and coercion necessary would have been left unconfessed for more than half a century – it does not affect the production of [Roswell] literature, which depends not on confronting the evidence but on discovering new patterns of connection and coincidence.” [Page 104]

“And this is true, any fact asserted can be met with counter-fact – some of them plausible, many disputed. Most creating contradictions that are unresolvable…All Facts in all inquiries come at us with their own shakiness, their own shimmer of uncertainty.” [Page 105]

“… you may not know the answer to a question, but that does not mean that the question is unanswerable.” [Page 105]

“…though, every fact in the case, no matter how solid-seeming, can be countered by some other fact, however speculative. Facts provoke new patterns even as they disprove old ones.” {page 105]

“… the foundational sense that there were bizarre forces at work in the period, paranoid … and tightly interlocked in the strangest imaginable ways, and by their nature resistant to the common-sense impulses of ordinary explanation …is, as far as one can tell, true.” [Page 105]

“Again and again, the investigation discloses bizarre figures and coincidences within a web of incident that seem significant in themselves.” [Page 107]

(Again, I’ve selected segments from Mr. Gopnik’s piece that seem to pertain to the Roswell thing, then and now. For those who are JFK assassination buffs, Nick Redfern has provided a link to a piece in the Dallas Morning News about him and the link between UFOs and the JFK murder:

Nick also has an article about the JFK assassination in the December issue of Penthouse, upcoming.)

  • The personal synchronicity of the post was nearly seamless as I had just taken a break from reading the thick and meaty issue of Fortean Times nearly completely devoted to conspiracy theories when I stopped by here to see what you were up to.
If the growing consensus of suspicions among scientists prove true beyond theory, we do live in a much stranger universe we could have imagined a decade ago.
Space without time, information and energy being a singularity, the same being self organizing into cycles of patterns that emerge depending upon what circumstances onto which they fall. I recently had an article published concerning predictability and cyclic patterns that seems we have multilateral parallel levels of self organizing information afoot that produce anomalies such as ufo phenomenon ( unidentified subject matter..lol) ..Of course a pattern does not constitute anything other than the famous term coincidence, a sort of post it note to ourselves that we remind ourselves with to revisit this term and the circumstances that drove us to apply it to anomalies , a term that means nothing in in of itself. That we can find evidence supporting whatever pet theory we have seems to indicate we follow the same paths of self organisation, while the universe works on a larger imaginative field that seems to be as Paul K suggested more art than science that lacks a steady state that would literally freeze itself into a void. An odd place we live in, to be sure.

  • Good points made in your post. I've always equated the Roswell saga with that of the JFK conspiracy carnival.

Both have spun off a money making cottage industry. Most "witnesses" to both events have morphed into something greater than the actual reality of the cases.

Last I heard, LBJ confided with a stripper that he was involved in the JFK matter...of course that was some time ago and things do change regardless of the actual truth of the matter.

Perhaps there was a stripper involved with the Roswell "cover-up" as well?

By Blogger Tim Hebert, at Thursday, October 31, 2013

  • Yes, Tim, Gopnik mentions, in some detail, the LBJ/stripper saga and other peccadilloes by those in the JFK scenario.

AS for Roswell's strippers, I bet a few of the airmen had access to some and may have confided in them about the crash and alien recoveries.

Perhaps The Roswell Dream Team will pursue the possibility -- and not get involved with strippers themselves, no matter how old those strippers are today.

  • As per conspiracy, the strippers would quickly have been relocated to a distant place like Winnipeg or Groendland.

  • I just finished digesting the aforementioned issue of FT subtitled 50 years of conspiracy theories, and one of many interesting essays pertains to the ghettoisation of JFK studies by Robin Ramsey of Red Lobster, which should be required reading for would be Roswell aficionados.

    From the essay..
The three main elements in the knowledge industry-the major media, the political system and academia are not interested in any aspect of this case. The mass media cannot deal with this subject; the Kennedy assassination material is now so vast and so complicated that no journalist can "research the subject"
And nothing to be done with the tarnishing of the "brand America" and the that the real nature of American politics-ie, it's utter corruption-should not be discussed in front of the voters."

The sense I received from this and many of the essays is the lack of a head on, direct challenge to the corruption in these systems, so all of these little scenarios ( including Roswell) stand as innovations of end runs around the main anchor that connects them, that while nice indirect metaphors of corruption, they take the safe route of digging into liminal material...rather than the 500 pound elephant in the room.

  • Continued..
If one authoritative figures, maybe two or three came out of the fear that has us boxed in of saying the emperor has no clothes and the entire system is so corrupt it's not salvageable..I suspect there's a floodgate to be opened in all this..but everyone in the three systems Robin mentioned not only have their own complicity to deal with, but as this whole thing teeters along, there is a ear of being set up in a policing and clean up action..to remove the threat of social upheaval..This to me is the real conspiracy, as real as it gets and more frightening than any single theory.

  • There are two problems with the comments here:

    1) JFK's assassination was indeed resultant from conspiracy- of that there should be no doubt in anyone's mind. It is an area that I have researched for decades- and on which I shall one day write. RR is aware that my research has been centered on Carlos Marcello, Santos Trafficante and Sam Giancana. There are things that have yet to come to light that will convince all when they do- the mafia did it.

    2) Roswell was indeed a crash resultant from an ET craft.

Continued investigation will prove both events to be related in this way: they will both be proven as historical fact one day.

By Blogger Anthony Bragalia, at Friday, November 01, 2013

  • @Tony:

    1) Mafia, JFK...old news and as yet not proven. If we were to believe every angle of conspiracy and the players involved, there would have not been enough hotel/motel rooms available in the DFW area to accommodate all the would be assassins...:)

    2. Again, and sorry if this ruffles your feathers, Roswell/ET not proven...:)

Are you suggesting that both incidents are related to one another?

By Blogger Tim Hebert, at Friday, November 01, 2013

  • "JFK's assassination was indeed resultant from conspiracy- of that there should be no doubt in anyone's mind. It is an area that I have researched for decades-"

...I KNEW that 'AJB' was really Kal Korff!!!!

  • Tim:

I sent your comment to Tony, so I don't know why he hasn't responded yet.

    But let me say this...

I was a JFK assassination nut, having been talked to by the FBI because during my John Birch sponsored radio show in Detroit at the time I had a quiz the Wednesday before the 22nd in which one of the questions was "Who would replace President Kennedy if he were assassinated?" (I have an off-air tape and the master tape of that show.)

On the 22nd, I was shopping for books at a drugstore (Cunningham's) in Detroit when the store sound system was playing news of the 22nd activity in Texas.

I asked the girl at the check-out register what was going on.

She said, someone shot the President.

I said, stupidly, "So someone finally got the bastard."

The girl-clerk gringed but I was a customer so she just gave me my change and I left.

I regretted my asinine remark for a long time, until I found out all the nasty things that JFK did and was doing when he was killed.

In 2006 I sold, on eBay, all my JFK collection of books, newspaper clippings, magazines, et cetera.

I was done with the JFK conspiracy and murder.

It didn't take me anywhere. It was an historical tragedy that had no upside to it. If Oswald didn't do it (or do it alone), so what?

The matter was done and it wouldn't impact me in any significant way.

As for the Mafia being involved, I will have something to say about that, but don't discount the possibility, with CIA complicity.

But who cares? Besides Tony and Nick Redfern?

Roswell, UFOs and JFK have nothing in common, despite some UFO buffs trying to make it so.

By Blogger RRRGroup, at Friday, November 01, 2013

  • Rich, having been brought up in Texas and finally graduating from a Texas university, it was well known that Dallas was a hot bed for anti-Kennedy activities...basically, Dallas was a "shitty" place to be and may still be for all that I know.

I too dabbled in the Kennedy assassination "scrum" for a bit and finally came to the conclusions very similar to yours, more leaning to a lone Oswald combined with a poorly orchestrated Warren Commission based on LBJ's ham fisted steering of the ordeal.

That's really it for me and wish not to go down that path of spoon fed insanity.

True, some are trying their best to show a linkage between JFK's assassination and the government's supposedly knowledge of UFOs...again, a path towards insanity IMHO.

  • Rich:

"Roswell, UFOs and JFK have nothing in common, despite some UFO buffs trying to make it so."

There's actually a large amount! I may do something on all this one of the days...

By Blogger Nick Redfern, at Saturday, November 02, 2013

  • If there is a UFO/JFK connection, I'd be awfully surprised, but since you think there is, Nick, I'll reconsider, of course.
