Albrecht Durer's UFO?

Did German artist Albrecht Durer [1471-1528] who lived and worked in Nuremberg, where those famous broadsheets of UFOs occurred (covered here a few months back), see a UFO and produced an engraving of what he saw, elaborating on his sighting via artistic metaphors because he was flummoxed by the sighting, as most UFO witnesses are?

Here is an exegesis of the Durer engraving:

Durer's Melancholia

  • I don’t believe that the painting has anything to do directly with the subject of what is called by some a ufo. I do suspect that the subtheme of melancholy that is lodged between the limits of logic and the unanswerable nature of life and, for some who delve perhaps too deeply in this interstatial realm, this game of randomness against theory, this message-less message is a signet of a perhaps vain attempt to transcend our existential isolation from any demonstrable meaning to life. I think this melancholy underpins some bad endings to some in ufology.
Ignoring one’s health, suicide, madness, the politicising of an unknown, the attempt to draw science into a game where angels fear to tread….what other social movement has no rock of edicts to perch upon while proselytizing of an unknown? It’s obvious that it is a wedge between the rational logic of the materialists and the deconstructive metalogic of doubt. That a single phenomenon may be a key to unlock everything is a hope against hope. Everything has it’s price in an contest with no conclusive argument. Is there a melancholy in this situation between these two stances? I think so. Paper logic with it's semiotics of signs and symbols represents an ideal universe with randomness excised. We look around us and witness randomness. Further afield some mathematicians believe there is no randomness, which then has a patina of fatalism attached to materialism. As Peggy Lee asked, "Is that all there is?"
I think this is the subject of this painting.

  • The interpretation, Bruce, by me, lies in the context of the Nuremberg and Basel UFO broadsheets/sightings.

Durer would deal with "his sighting" in artistic (philosophical) modus, as he had no other frame of reference, not even a religious one.

  • I can agree that your interpretation is also true. There is always signs, symbols, portents and limial phenomenon between A and B in a causal chain. Whether it was the announcement that God was dead in the aftermath of the Holocaust, the rise of the existentialists, the Cold War and now perhaps the growing unease with the state of the natural environment.I think all of the above has a psychic connection to
their expression in broadsides and now in books, videos and other reporting.
I don't see a disconnect and I don't see it as simply pigeon holed into a "psycho-social" from of word-smithed label.
It remains an enigma prone to subjectivity of theory as in the intended meaning. All of this is interconnected in some unknown manner.

  • Interconnected, BD, like in a deterministic Universe?

Or random nonsense as in a quantum Universe?

Then what about an insane deity?

  • Perhaps a better way to bridge the gap between our respective interpretations is to say he witnessed something disturbing and his response was philosophic. The theme of melancholy is his emotional tone when ruminating on the gap between what he saw and what answers he had that were available. A sort of codex of a personal journey artistically rendered.

  • I think any deity is bound to insanity if ethical human behaviors are embedded in a totem as it fails the smell test in experiential reality. I think it's a game in play, and we are being gamed..wedged between several mirrors. What is on the other side has not determined what it is.
