The Roswell Slides: Not Interested!

I contacted several journalist friends with the Roswell slide story, hoping to get them to one-up the (allegedly) pending presentation on one of the fringe networks (History or Science?).

Noted Poynter freelancer Jim Romenesko was not interested but wanted to know which fringe network was involved. (I told him History or Discovery, although I have no idea).

Dan Spalding, a Chicago area reporter, passed.

And my CNN contact wrote back that his network had passed on the matter, because of the people involved (Roswell promoters) when it was presented to them earlier and doubted they would be interested now, but he'll let me know.

While UFO stories -- serious stories -- are rarely covered by news media, Roswell seems to be really taboo, the "incident" encrusted with fraud and lies and a kind of social hysteria that demeaned the topic years ago.

So, it seems we'll have to wait for the presentation charade to see what happens.

As a local TV reporter told me, in the world today, Roswell is a beleaguered story without societal value.

  • You got it right. Roswell is now a dead duck. Perhaps we should be thankful for this.

But I guarantee you that AJB and his gang will continue to plug it forever and a day, for the simple reason that they just cannot or will not accept the obvious. As long as enough ETHers are out there (and there always will be) the preposterous Roswell yarn will still have its followers.

  • And your last sentence speaks the total truth of the matter...UFOs hold no intrinsic value for society.

Reverse engineering, via Roswell, is/was (always will be) total BS.

Alleged slides will be nothing more than a carnival side show fraught with personal self-promotion.

I suspect that the next generation of Roswell research will be conducted using a Ouija board...if it hasn't happened already.

  • Rich.

CNN passed on this because of the people involved, ( Roswell investigators ).

Thats because they will not entertain the idea that Roswell was anything but a mundane event ie Mogul.

And thus wont have people promoting the idea that it was ET, instead they ridicule the idea.

With most media its all one sided and not very balanced or fair and i dont blame the owner for calling in Pathologists and experts to ascertain what the slides depict.

  • If the History Channel picks it up it could be inserted in a Pawn Stars episode.

Ricks says, "Did any papers come with that?"

  • All of these negative comments are lies or speculation at best of course.

And the truth is that it is the other way around Rich- we would have nothing to do with someone such as Romenesko.

In November of 2011 The Columbia Journalism Review found instances of Romenesko plagiarizing material causing Romenesko to resign from his employer.

And in 2008 Wired magazine ran a very disparaging article on him "Romenesko and the Dawn of Gossip Journalism."

    The man is slime.

  • Am I missing something? What does the personal travails of one journalist have to do with the less than marginal interest in the slides? I am not hearing that the owner is exactly being badgered by the media or has any deal in the works. The lack of transparency doesn't help..not some journalist's reputation..that's a huge stretch.
Until I hear otherwise about the theoretical slides, I don't see anything to even discuss or promote any interest in them as a ambivalent revisionism of a half century old story...I personally doubt it's relevance as apparently others do.

My wife and I have two good friends that are forensic pathologists. You are not dealing with a body. You are dealing with a old slide of a body, an image. It proves nothing. Is it truly an old slide? If so, then what? An genuine slide of a alleged creature that is entirely circumstantial.Common sense seems to be left at the doorstep when it comes to this much ado over nothing.

  • Bruce:

And don't forget that long before these slides we had that great film - the autopsy film. In 20 years or so we have progressed (i.e. regressed) from a dynamic 30-minute film shown to a zillion people to two slides which look like they will be shown to precisely nobody.

That takes some beating, doesn't it? In reality, AJB and his gang deserve our sympathy. Spare a thought for them, won't you?

  • There is something with the slide- it's simply a matter of what. Like Bruce said it's just an image. We can maybe prove how old it is- but it will be extremely difficult to verify whatever appears on the slide. However, depending on what information the investigators and owner have yet to reveal, it could be something of interest.
At this point we are still just sitting here waiting for the slides to go public.
I hate the stigma that Roswell has gained over the years. The incident is bizarre and there has been no definitive explaination that covers every facet of the enigma.
The slides probably cannot prove anything, that doesn't make them a complete waste of time.
I can see many folks on here have been burned in the past and wish to not be taken for a fool again. My thought is that you can never be taken a fool if you keep your mind open to all possibilities.

Thank you for the update Rich.

Two old slides of a non substantiated possibility versus the Russian invasion, the breakdown of order in the Middle East, rising sea levels,a non functioning legislative Congress, racial tensions and a stagnant living wage...Did anyone say "relevancy?" No one is sitting on the edge of their seats for the alleged slides to appear while the world turns on itself? Where are their priorities? These slides will change history...with their relevancy..and immediate impact.
    Ask any media expert.

  • Of course CNN passed on it due to the folks involved; from what I've seen over the years most UFO "investigators" do an absolutely terrible job of evidence handling, etc. It's not even a question of professionalism...it's the lack of using accepted technique when handling evidence (anything from eyewitness accounts to physical material).

Even if AJB and friends actually had valid, real evidence of a crash at Roswell mishandling would add enough doubt to render said evidence dubious AT BEST.

No wonder CNN won't touch it.

  • The big reveal has been dragged out for far too long now, and while we wait the story seems to have changed.

I'm not sure they even exist.

By Blogger Red Eye View, at Saturday, August 30, 2014

  • Bruce brings up a good point about the slides as evidence.

I am always surprised when UFO proponents describe photos as "physical" evidence. They're not, they're an image. They are not the thing itself, they are merely a representation. You couldn't even call a camera a measuring instrument -- it's a recording, yes, but what physical properties is it recording?

That's not to say images cannot provide evidence, it's just that our confidence in the usefulness of that evidence should be very low unless corroborated by several other types of evidence.

    A picture is not proof.
