UFOs seen/reported by Astronomers

This came from Daniel Transit and the UFO Base web-site (no longer extant?):

  • These are an interesting find Rich. I think most could probably be explained as some sort of unknown natural cosmic occurrences. However the disc ones are highly unusual and pretty interesting when noting how long ago these observations were made and by trained eyes.
I didn't read them all yet, but was surprised to see a handful of "disc" sightings right off the bat.

  • Almost 400 astronomer sightings right into the present, yet the debunker refrain (e.g. astronomers Phil Plait and Carl Sagan) is that astronomers never see or report UFOs.

In 1980, Gert Helb of CUFOS in conjunction with Hynek conducted a survey of amateur astronmers. Of 1800 surveys returned, 24% said they had puzzling sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena. (There's over another 400 sightings.)

Astrophysicist Peter Sturrock conducted two surveys in the 1970s of his colleagues. The first in 1973 of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics found that 5% of the 423 respondents admitted to a UFO sighting (20+ sightings).

In 1975, Sturrock did a more comprehensive survey of members of the American Astronomical Society, with over 1300 returned. Again about 5% admitted to UFO sightings. (~65 sightings)

In the latter survey, only two respondents to the survey agreed to waive anonymity, indicating that going public was obviously a very touchy subject, probably the real reason that that astronomers usually don't go public with their sightings.

So either the likes of Plait or Sagan are ignorant of the evidence or liars, or they are believers in Zoamism psychosocial psychobabble that everything you don't like can be explained out of existence as mass delusions and hallucinations. Apparently astronomers are just as prone as anyone else to the psychological/social delusion of UFOs.
