Three "potentially" habitable planets found, not that far away (from Earth): 40 Light Years

Only 40 Light Years.....yah, that's pretty close, for sure. (And why would the potential inhabitants, if they could, show up here, in massive numbers, if UFO reports have any accuracy at all?)

  • From the article...

"Although they orbit very close to their host dwarf star, the inner two planets only receive four times and twice, respectively, the amount of radiation received by the Earth, because their star is much fainter than the Sun. That puts them closer to the star than the habitable zone for this system, although it is still possible that they possess habitable regions on their surfaces. The third, outer, planet’s orbit is not yet well known, but it probably receives less radiation than the Earth does, but maybe still enough to lie within the habitable zone."

Um... that would be a "no" for a species like ours. For a "species like ours" you need a planet in the "Goldilocks Zone" i.e where water is liquid, there is not too much or too little solar radiation, and planet should not be "tidally locked" (always facing the star). It does not sound like any of these fit "our type" of species or a place we'd want to buy "beach front property" since we'd likely contract skin cancer from "2 to 4 times the radiation".

It should be noted tho' that if the "Greys" are "real" ETs their "large eyes" might be an indication that their "home" is possibly one with much lower lighting levels than ours. In evolutionary terms "form follows function"... but let's give one round of belly laughs for the idea their motto is "Take me to your DNA."

If you're interested in the "science" of what is a habitable planet I suggest "World-Building" by Stephen L. Gillett [former USGS geologist and a published "hard SF" author] is a great book for explaining planetary / solar system requirements in real science terms (even tho' its target market is SF authors).

Also there is "Habitable Planets for Man" by Stephen H. Dole which was a book published by the RAND Corporation back in the 60s for the U.S. Air Force and is available as a free PDF download. Dole went on to write a solar system "generator" program in FORTRAN which made and appearance in Sagan's Cosmos series and book. I discovered this book in the Rocketdyne (then a division of Rockwell International's North American Aviation) library in the mid-1980s. It was an eye opener to me that the USAF actually paid for the research in the 60's.

  • Good news is, Red Dwarf stars have a 'life expectancy' of somewhere in the region of twenty trillion years, I believe. Therefore, if there is any life on that star's planets, there's plenty of time to get a super advanced civilisation going.

I expect them to land approximately ten trillion years from now*...

*I fully appreciate that the sun will be a Black Dwarf long before then; though its swelling up could push the Earth further out into the Solar System rather than cook it.

Or they could have landed on Earth some millions of years ago and then went extinct. Or then they traveled to other places in the galaxy. Or they are still there, living discretely, not using radio frequency to communicate.

  • Don:

Why can't they use radios or some other mode of communication?

I like that they're living discretely......rather than discreetly. (And I accept that they could live discretely -- apart from others.)

A planetary expedition could have stumbled upon the Earth years ago, even getting stranded here.

But how do we explain the massive amount of UFOs, reported over the years?

Are they still coming, to this forlorn ball of water?

I'll tell you the secret. According to a few visitors on a neighboring blog just 4 light years away, our little grey friends are benevolent fellows who simply want to help their children grow spiritually, clean up their planet, and avoid blowing up the cosmos with nuclear weapons. But between you and me, I think the real reason is our tiny friends are bored with the same Friday night routine. They're simply seeking alternate venues for date night. But don't tell anyone I told you - I've heard MP's from Roswell will have you picking my bones from the sand.

Of course not. I'm certain these guys are referring to those radiant entities that can live anywhere - you know, those aliens that always turn up in every series produced by the Star Trek franchise!

Indeed, that's why archeologists have consistently shown intelligent space faring hominids are part of Earth's fossil record. By the way, did you get this idea from SOM1-01?

  • David Rudiak has reminded us, on Kevin's blog, that General Exon told investigators that everyone from President Truman down knew Roswell was an ET crash. This was a US Army General, so he MUST know what he was talking about, eh? Plus all the other Roswell 'experts', of course.

In which case why are we getting so worked up about the discovery of possible ETs on a planet 40 light years away in Aquarius? And why are these astro-scientists so ignorant of what was officially known 7 decades ago?

By Blogger cda, at Tuesday, May 03, 2016

  • David Rudiak, CDA, has an irrational obsession with Roswell and the ET scenario.

You, and the rest of us, have to remove ourselves from his mind-set or we shall all become as loopy as he is about the matter.

  • based on my imperfect knowledge and laziness in studying star evolution, if a star is a dwarf, then that means it has been through its red giant expansion. if so, then these 3 planets are cinders. if they have subsequently become habitable, then that must mean that water as a minimum must have re-moistened the planets. that is very unlikely because that solar system by now should have been swept clean of asteroid and comet residue (under the assumption that this solar system is very old.)

Here's TIME magazine's take on those three planets:

  • Stellar spectral classes are as follows [hottest to coolest]: O, B, A, F, G, K, M, L, T.
Red Dwarfs are M class stars. They are not the same as the Orange "dwarf", G class, we orbit. The red dwarf has life time on the order of 20 Billion years while a orange dwarf is about half that. The star described in the report seems to around the M / L border.

M, L, and T class stars live a very long time -- Longer than the current age of the universe [or what we believe to be the age of the universe]. Stars only do funny things like swell up and roast planets or explode *after* they have reached the end of their life.

Generally, the SETI folks want to look at / listen to stars that are the same age or older than ours [G2V] since they believe longer lived stars would have a greater chance that "intelligent life" will have evolved.

It's interesting that the TIME reporter is more positive in his assertion this third planet is in the Goldilocks zone than the quote posted from the ESO site which says its habitability was uncertain.

Red Dwarf stars are stars that have not joined the main sequence, hence their long life and inability to become giants, red or otherwise.

Astronomers wouldn't be so foolish as to posit potential habitability if they knew that the star's life was over (as our sun's will be in five billion years excepting stellar engineering saving or replacing it*).

*As an aside, it's possibly interesting that no evidence of stellar engineering has been found (even Tabby's Star doesn't have the infra-red signature); I'm thinking of Arthur C. Clarke's short story (this is not the 'fiction fallacy') about aliens stealing our sun; apparently theoretically possible, though no stars have been noted switching positions in the galaxy, so probably impossible. Sorry about the waffle.

"And why are these astro-scientists so ignorant of what was officially known 7 decades ago?"

I presume "new generation - new ideas". How many times has human civilization mastered great knowledge and forgot that it existed only to rediscover it a century later?

Oh, Brian, I am afraid you misunderstood things(as always). I naver said that those ancient aliens stayed on earth for a living. I was thinking in just small visitations here and there on earth.

Given the great age of the universe we should be prepared for the existence of civilizations incredibly advanced and superior to humans. We might look like ants or even more insignificant for them. Others, still superior to us, might take us more seriously, like for example the fellows of the guys who fell near Roswell.
