Alienation….no, not Alien Nation, but Alienation [sic]

The book Alienation: The Cultural Climate of Our Time by Gerald Sykes [George Braziller, NY, 1964] presents ruminations, in Two Volumes, on how man becomes alienated from himself.

And this is exemplified by Ufology’s extraterrestrial (ET) believers.

The great polymath Erich Fromm covers, in a chapter entitled The Sane Society, what alienation means, in various vicissitudes of life, which resonate with the “belief” of UFO buffs who think UFOs came to Earth from outer space and are controlled (“manned”) by extraterrestrial beings.

You know my position on ET visitation by intelligent beings [sic]:

If one looks at the night sky, and views the Milky Way, our galaxy, supplementing that observation with views of the Universe that NASA and astronomers have provided over the years, common sense tells us that Earth is a remote backwater planet in an obscure location in the cosmos, a planet that would not be on the travel agenda of an advanced species of living creatures that have the ability to traverse space.

(Even advanced beings using “worm holes,” as some UFO ET believers contend, would have far better places to visit, if the Universe is as diverse and strange has cosmologists find it to be.)

What has happened is that UFO ET believers have lost their senses, as the book, noted above, and Dr. Fromm’s chapter elucidates.

Fromm says the form of alienation affecting modern man has been with humankind for a long while and was present in form as idolatry early on.

“Man spends his energy, his artistic capacities on building an idol, and then he worships this idol, which is nothing but the result of his own human effort. His life forces have flown into a ‘thing,’ and this thing, having become an idol, is not experienced as a result of his own productive effort, but a something apart from himself, over and against him, which he worships and to which he submits.” [op.cit., Page 68]

“ … man does not experience himself as the active bearer of his own powers and richness, but as an impoverished ‘thing’ dependent on powers outside himself, unto whom he has projected his living substance.” [ibid, Page 69, italics are Fromm’s, bold print is mine]

“Alienation as we find it in modern society is almost total …” [ibid, Page 70]

“We are surrounded by things of whose nature and origin we know nothing.” [ibid Page 76]

“I believe also that the boredom and monotony of life which is engendered by the alienated way of living is an additional factor.” [ibid, Page 87]

Yes, my experience with UFO aficionados is that they are bored and desirous of fame (or fortune) and need of attention, in some sphere of life and have settled on the UFO phenomenon as the vehicle for their passage from boredom and a meaningless existence.

UFOs offer an easy route to fame, even a fame that is limited to a bizarre fringe of like-interested persons, the topic not requiring much in the way of intellectual or academic acumen.

So, to sum up: You ET believers are living on the brink of a psychological malady and are submersed in a form of self-instigated” alienation.

You are almost nuts is what I’m saying.

An advanced species of intelligence and curiosity would not engage in the ongoing and past surveillance of Earth in the numbers indicated by UFO reports/sightings.

The Earth does not warrant such interest. It just doesn’t.

  • Thoughtful.

  • But UAPs are real at some level. Undeniable so if you've seen one, simple as that.

  • No one is arguing, Bryan, that UAP (or UFOS) have not been sighted. (Well Zoam Chomsky is saying that UFOs have never been sighted or are real at all. God bless him.)

My viewpoint here is that they are NOT ET craft.

(My post, above, seems exactly fitted for you.)

  • RR,

In many ways that is so. However we differ in your characterization as Earth being a backwater of no interest where I believe the reverse. Evidence, in my mind, shows we are likely among the unique where sentient life not only exists but dominates in not only the habitable zone of our solar system but of the galaxy, as we are here.

That we are here, exploring physics in intellectual wonder, must be accepted mathmatically as a given, perhaps to the extent being THE given standard until we find our betters in first contact. If we look internally to the wealth of life here and the rareness of sentient life (that, granted, may well just be survival of the fittest) it is still fair to project the same ratio into the cosmos.

Now to our agreement, most of UFO 'sightings' are bogus, mistakes, fraud, and etc. But amid those numbers the UAP notion is that there are things yet to be learned to include some physical and visual. It also follows with my orientation toward our being the starting point given that as we explore with robots the most likely first contact would be with the same.

Of course the rub comes with the old "so where are they" to which it seems to me that Fermi's math was optimistic.

  • Bryan...

I take your views as valid and sensible, to a point.

When I see all the NASA and astronomical photos of the galaxy and Universe, or look at the night sky, I can't imagine Earth being significant at all, nor unique when it comes to sentient, intelligent life.

Earth is an insignificant dot in any cosmological context.

And we are a primitive species, a laughable creation.

That advanced beings from elsewhere would see us as otherwise undercuts the epithet "advanced,"

UFOs may be an extraordinary phenomenon, yet to be explained, is okay with me. (See my latest post about the Betty Hill dress.)

But that extraterrestrial beings are reconnoitering this planet in the numbers indicated by UFO reports and sightings, currently and over the years -- See "Wonders in the Sky" -- makes no sense at all (to me).

That's all I'm trying to convey.

  • RR,

I'll work at you one more time, think that we are in the Goldilocks Zone of our Goldilocks type solar system, of the Goldilocks size, with the Goldilocks stabilization moon, a rock and water world...

As to being insignificant, size doesn't matter here. We've put "I love Lucy" et al. out into the universe for years now. Note I saw another clip a few weeks back on the Voyager I photo of the Solar system being presented by Sagan. Still impressive.

As to our being a primitive species, think CERN and ignore our violent and ignorant brothers. That the point there.

And we agree on the unlikeliness of the ongoing reconnoitering...but if they were way smarter still a possibility but way unlikely indeed.

  • We are not far apart Bryan..

The ETH is a possibility (for me) but s you note, unlikely.

Yet, you still see humankind as special. I don't.

Maybe be have disparate contacts. My associations, media people and their followers along with a raft of Facebook nuts, make me see humans, as disproportionately ignorant and boorish, primitive even.

So, I envy you. Your experience is otherwise.
