UFO Conjectures

Keyhoe, Scully, and UFOs on CBS in 1958

Dominick mentioned, in a comment for my Wargames post (6/7/2016) the Armstrong Theater show of January 22, 1958, in which CBS seems to have cut the sound when Major Keyhoe was about to disclose something about flying saucers that CBS or the United States Air Force didn't want the public to hear.

Those who saw that show, then, or in a more recent UFO documentary, would see a conspiracy of silence in the sound black out.

I looked, on YouTube, for a clip of the show but could find none.

However, I did find a Mike Wallace interview with Donald Keyhoe, which is interesting I think:

And one with Major Keyhoe and Frank Scully, the author of Behind the Flying Saucers about the alleged 1948 Aztec crash:

Both "interview" segments provide the UFO mind-set in the late 1950s, but little more actually.

If anyone can find the "sound black out show," let me know. I'd like to put it online for the edification of conspiracy theorists or those who need to see why some UFO buffs are conspiracy theorists.

  • Not being resident in the US, I did not see the show. However, I did read about it afterwards and am pretty sure Keyhoe was cut off for deviating from the planned script of the show, not because he mentioned something the USAF objected to. He wanted to talk about a congressional investigation that was coming soon on UFOs, but this was not in the original script; hence the producers cut off the sound track.

At least that is how I recall reading about it, maybe two or three years afterwards.

I assume Keyhoe mentions the affair in one of his books, but have not checked to see. I also recall that he objected to the fact that he (acting for NICAP) was given only 7 minutes or so, whereas the AF was given 20 minutes or more.

But you may have more info on all this than I do as I never saw it, either live or repeated. Nor do I know of any archive of it.

  • Sorry CDA, producers don't have anything to do with what's airing, live, on TV; that would be the Director.

In this instance, the Director surely had an Air Force officer sitting nearby, and when Keyhoe said, "And now I'm going to reveal something that has never been disclosed before..." that Director was told to cut the sound feed.

Keyhoe did address this in a NICAP bulletin and maybe one of his books.

Cutting Keyhoe off because he was going to announce a Congressional Hearing would have been silly. That wasn't "something that has never been disclosed before."

Everyone knew that Keyhoe was calling for Congressional hearings about UFOs, and a few congressmen were quick to agree.

  • I have found the story in FLYING SAUCERS TOP SECRET by Keyhoe, chapter xi "The Armstrong Theater Battle".

He was cut off by producer Robert Costello but went on speaking unaware of this! He ended his sentence [about NICAP co-operating with a congressional committee] with "... it will absolutely prove that UFOsare real machines under intelligent control".

If you've got the book it is probably worth a look. I have not reread the whole chapter.

  • Thank you CDA.

    I stand corrected.

I have an ebook copy. One of my sons destroyed my original paperback copy. (He was angry with me.)

  • Rich, you are to be strongly congradulated for following up my recent comments and for posting that excellent Wallace/Keyhoe interview. It is more than common by UFO newbies to ridicule Donald Keyhoe as a poor investigator and/or spokesperson about the UFO phenomenon. But as we see in this interview, he could more than hold his own with the young and aggressive Mike Wallace (shilling for the tobacco companies!) who had the USAF force-feeding him lines of attack and ridicule against Keyhoe. Donald Keyhoe knew his stuff; he knew the names of important witnesses; he knew dates and reported speeds tracked on radar;and he had the courage and intellegence to make his case against government and MSM opposition or indifference. Keyone knew that UFOs were "real machines under intellegent control"....and so didn't military intellegence, hence the secrecy.

  • Thanks, Dominick...

I'm with you all the way. Keyhoe was a highly intelligent, military guy -- articulate and knowing.

Wallace was being his usual assault-oriented self, making a name, but that was inappropriate with Keyhoe.

That the general mind-set, at the time (and still?) was flying saucer witnesses were nutty is blatantly shown in the interview.

And, while watching, some current UFO shows, I am sick and tired of "experts" explaining witness sightings as deficient.

One last night had a pilot mistaking a red-lit thing for Mars, which has always been a pin-point in the sky no matter how close Mars is to the Earth. The pilot said he saw a thing large as an aircraft. close-up which sped away.

That Venus keeps coming in as a spotted UFO also irks. Venus, no matter how bright in the morning or evening sky, cannot account for what people report as what they saw. People are accurate observers, and see what they see.

That old argument about witness testing where a guy comes into a room and students are asked to tell what they say is wacky.

The students get the core observation right: a guy comes in and does mischief. They may miss the color of his shirt or what kind of shoes he had on or the color of his hair, but they get the main observation correct: a guy comes in and does something that they, invariably get right, despite the minutiae they may mis-observe.

This is how it is with most UFO sighting: observers get the core observation correct. That's the important element. And a pilot is keen to see correctly what he sees. His life depends upon that.

Keyhoe knew that flying saucers were something seemingly intelligently controlled.

You and I may disagree about what that intelligence entailed, but there is often intelligence in the maneuvers or movement of UFOs.

Keyhoe was working against a mind-set and/or conspiracy of silence by the military. And he is a hero of mine, and yours too.

  • We may not disagree "about what that intelligence entailed" as much as you think. You have made an excellent case that some UFOs are AI and I am now inclined to agree with you. Of course, questions about the ultimate source of AI (if that is even a legitimate way to frame the issue) just pushes the UFO mystery to another level.

  • There is at least an audio of this show:

It should be track nr. 5 , but I canĀ“t test it because I smashed the audio of my pc.

  • Zak, Zak, Zak...

    I feel your PC pain.

These damn AI-oriented computers can provoke rage. I often feel it with my units.

    Thanks for the link, nevertheless.
