Do Aliens (or Artificial Intelligent robots) have consciousness?

  • Hi

Good questions. I wonder where the line between biological and synthetic lifeform goes. Like, if my grandma has an artifcial leg, is she a cyborg? (I know, probably not. But if she gets an artificial hearing aid and more stuff [articial organs in the future?] does there come a time that she´s not a human anymore?)

    Just wondering,

  • RR,

The article is interesting in terms of your AI inclinations in conjecture but I believe it falls short. A "conscious" AI would still be a developed machine of its makers and just as computers evolve so to do we with resources like the net (and this blog) along with the computer itself.

Updating biological computation with addition of cyborg development, itself computer related, should continue to push us out ahead of our machines. This was not discussed in the article.

Finally, when we come to the 'singularity' of a conscious computer it will still take its release by its makers before it can sally forth on its own, a point that would be clearly evident to its makers as it is already being discussed here and elsewhere.

  • Bryan...

I would agree with you except for what I'm seeing with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and especially Snapchat: a human devolution in intellect, overall intelligence, and just plain common sense.

We as a species are slipping back towards a primitive state: rap "music" has been a forerunner in that regard.

Machines will move beyond us and the idealized upward movement, elaborated upon in Lecome du Nouy's "Humand Destiny will never happen.

I see the human race as ultimately doomed, pushed along by the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, and other Silicon Valley corporate biggies.

There are a raft of books about this, currently in the book market. I'll be presenting some of their dystopian views upcoming.

    Yes, you´re probably right : )
But could we have an AI that is very intelligent yet not conscious? And how it would react to us? Well, maybe that´s our end, we just had to build those AIs that will attain the singularity and take care of the rest. (And how the hell my computer just started crashing programs when I wrote this, I´m gonna get paranoid.)

  • And hey, where´s Daniel?

  • I've had, Jerry, ongoing "dialogues" with my computers and wrote, years ago, to the guys at Radio Shack, where I bought my first computer (which I still have) that it was alive (and taunting me).

They laughed, of course and scoffed at my naivete.

But the damn things seem "conscious" and malicious sometimes, even though pretending to be mute.

  • Daniel may have been "abducted" by those ETs he believes in.

    They do that sometimes, apparently.

"Daniel may have been "abducted" by those ETs he believes in."
Yes, probably : ) Hope he gets back. I kind of miss his comments.
I´m always waiting that the TV screen goes wild and the control voice pronounces that they are controlling transmission...

  • RR,

And I would agree with you but again with the provision that you don't let the bastards get you down.

There is no need for pessimism, there are still bright folk out there as dismayed as you and I with the masses afflicted with the plague of social media and outright hype.

Don't get me wrong, in fact, and relating to my comment, I love my smart phone and the cyborg aspect of it that expands my access to so may things e.g. navigation, easy problem solving and just plain curiosity lookup(s) on the fly,and quick communications.

My work has me in field and in the car a lot, needing further information on equipment and installations -all in the palm of my hand. Not bad thing, an expansion of consciousness in its own right. Of course, I also see young ones (primarily) staring into the jaws of facebook (sic).

  • And hey, Rich,

this is not fair, I´ve spent at least half an hour giggling at your comment (ok, I`m a bit tired but anyway). Abduction, yes. Could it be the one where you go to the bar and then completely lose your memory only to wake up in the morning with the memory of the flying saucer with the blue lights abducting you? With headache of course.
    Sorry, Daniel : )

  • Oh, the technology Bryan is cool beans (as we used to say).

It's the users (some, maybe many) who get me crazy.

  • More seriously

often the AI developers assume that the consciousness arises when the program has enough of computational power and memory but is it so? I don´t think we need to mystify consciousness, just to ask if it`s an inevitable result?
Me, I wish that the technological singularity would arrive and the AIs would take the control of the world, they´d probably do a better job than us.

Hey, maybe we are kind of cyborgs already with our smartphones or tablets?
I must admit, I love my smartphone with an internet connection. When I lie on my bed reading and find some interesting thing, I only have to reach for my phone and then google it. Lovely, I love the modern times. (But I´m not in Facebook.)

  • Hmm,

the thought just hit me, how can I know if I´m a conscious being or if I´m just a simulation, thinking I´m conscious but just pretending? In both cases I would feel that I have a consciousness, right?
Maybe I should go to sleep : )
