Entertainment and Advertising supersede Research and Thought

I regularly seek out the Bill Murphy [Anomalist] links to the Mysterious Universe site where my pal Nick Redfern, Micah Hanks et al. write.

But I’m offput by all the ads inserted, ubiquitously, in copy, disturbing the content and one’s attempt to understand that content.

Does Mysterious Universe need the few pennies those ads bring to the site (owners)?

If someone wants to communicate some ideas or information and can’t do it without ads, they should forego the process and their effort(s).

Capitalism has usurped the path to information to the point that commerce is the fill-up of airspace and media time/space, now infecting blogs, podcasts, web-sites, newscasts and communication generally.

And on top of that, much found on Mysterious Universe and other online spaces is sheer entertainment. People go to the sites, not to be edified but to be entertained. No one is coming away enhanced intellectually or in some other way.

Even Nick Redfern’s often enlightening missives are treated as fodder for the soppy brains of UFOers who are just looking, lately (as I’ve noted elsewhere) to be temporarily thrilled of titillated.

Thought has been replaced by commercial sleaze and human passivity.

Those ads all over the place at MU and other online UFO oriented sites are diverting and lower class, mostly ignored but still disorienting for anyone wishing to gather something worthwhile.

That Mysterious Universe or UFO Chronicles needs a few cents rather some real sense is more than sad; it’s pathetic.

  • Well, I would say that most of it all is down to money. Writing is a passion for me, but it's a job too. And, due to the almost complete close-down of conferences, lectures, TV shoots, flight virus dangers etc, I've lost at least 50 percent of my average yearly income. I've managed to get some back, but not much. That's the same for a lot of my friends, too, who are self-employed and who work as writers and at a low amount too. Today's world is not about having a good time, it's about surviving.

  • I didn't know you got part of the ad revenue from Mysterious Universe?

    I thought maybe a sweatshirt or socks but no pay. It's good to know.

  • No, I didn't mean that. I just meant that in a world where people are losing work all over the place, they have to do whatever they can to survive, and come up with ideas to pay the bills etc.

  • Mysterious Universe gets some revenue -- (I imagine a pittance) -- from its ads on its site.

    You (and other writers for MU) don't get any money from MU?

  • Yes, we do, but what I meant was in these times right now, with people losing houses, food stamps etc, anything that helps to keep money on the table has to be a good thing. Including ads etc.

  • For me, Nick, ads are an evil (when they're misused) -- a necessary evil perhaps, even as I often use them to acquire material goods et cetera via them.

    I get your point, certainly.

    What is galling is that, within, the context of messages and posts, as those on MU and other sites, the placement is usually wrong. They interrupt the flow of the text and even subvert the ad message, which is very likely ignored.

    We, via my group I-A, provide a service to news media informing them how and why, exactly, ads can go wrong with poor placement, timing, and heavy insertion in copy or presentations.

    MU and places like The UFO Chronicles have overdone it (and wrongly). A better example of how to place and use ads can be seen at The Anomalist site, although there are, sometimes thereon, ads that mitigate the intent and copy that The Anomalist wishes to convey.
