A 1959 flying saucer sighting (and an excellent account of it)

  • A classic and "believable" close encounter case. I'm not sure why the author obnoxiously and presumptuously early on calls the account a "myth." No debunking explanation is given. Overall the writeup seems sympathetic to the woman's story. Perhaps "myth" is being used in the academic sense but that doesn't really fit.

  • What's "believable"? That Mrs. Moreland really saw a space ship with two occupants (facing backwards) with jets moving the ship around overhead? And that one occupant approached her and had only one hand? Come on, guys. That story AS A REAL EVENT is NOT believable. Dreams (I'm not asserting that she was dreaming) can appear very "real" but we don't believe them to be REAL events in the same sense as, say, Mrs. Moreland milking the cows that morning and talking to her husband afterward. Something happened but I have no solid idea what...

  • What seems to be an hallucinatory event Dom only happened to Mrs. Moreland this one time.

Those singular episodes were -- they don't seem to be happening much these days -- psychological or, as my son thinks, neurological.

Oliver Sacks would offer that they are neurological but why only once? I have a suggestion and will put it online, here, in a day or so.

  • Dominick:

I don't subscribe to the ETH at all. So my answer to the question about whether it's believable that "Moreland really saw a space ship with two occupants" or that "one occupant approached her and had only one hand" is no.

There are countless anomalous "entity encounters" recorded in human history. These encounters tend to have striking commonalities despite highly variable appearances in many respects. This leads me to think that something like Caravaca's distortion theory is probably correct.

  • What struck me as amazing, was milking the cows AFTER, that surprising experience, at 5.30 in the dark of night, on her own, with only a torch. That's what I think, was very responsible,as a farmers wife. She stood her ground in amazement, then milked the cows, all on her own, after the event!..

As for "dreaming" that story;...WHAT? in the middle of a paddock 5.30 in the dark of night, rounding cows up for milking!? Never heard of it!..?..BUT!?..

Dreaming the story UP, is another question all together. Why would Mrs.Moreland want to do that?..Escapes me!?..NO, I accept her story, and others, Till otherwise.......?

  • It's an interesting story, Daniel, not to be dismissed out of hand but does need some real analysis.

I'll offer a few suggestions upcoming, but I think Mrs. Moreland experienced what she said she did.

What the essence of that experience was is what we should strive to explain or understand. It's a fascinating tale or encounter.
