The Madness of ET Belief

Copyright 2021, InterAmerica, Inc.

I’ve always liked the idea that Earth (and we humans) are being visited by extraterrestrial beings, in flying saucers [UFOs].

It started with Frank Scully, supported by George Adamski and supplemented by Donald Keyhoe.

But then my sojourn in a few semesters of Astrophysics in college wiped that notion off the surface of my brain.

And, as many of you know, I’m, today, no ET enthusiast, for all the reasons of astronomical difficulties with the idea:

We are a smidgen in the Milky Way galaxy and much less – a quark – in the Universe or Cosmos; that is, Earth is virtually nothing in the great scheme of things.

I know a few who visit and comment here think otherwise but you are pathologically wrong. They really haven’t thought through the prob- lems of space, time, or anything else that impacts the probability (and even the possibility) of ETs visiting Earth.

I won’t go into, again, the insistence that travel between possible alien civilizations – even via worm holes or vortexes or spacewarps – is problematical in more ways than one can count.

But I will accent the reasons why supposed advanced beings from elsewhere don’t or won’t come here to Earth, certainly in the droves that UFO reports indicate:

Earth is pathetic, within the context of other planets, especially those containing possible advanced civilizations.

(While some of you continue to think that this planet, with all its wonders and “awesome” attributes is a special place of existence, it isn’t…when one compares just that which sic-fi imaginings have produced over the years.)

The idea of stupefying sojourns by alleged space travelers assumes that they have missed other planets with advanced or interesting beings and flora or fauna and find Earth to be a wondrous zoo unlike anything in cosmic existence.

If one assumes that ET believers think the galaxy and/or cosmos is flush with alien civilizations, how is it that Earth then becomes a standout? What makes it so? (Again, use your imagination.)

And if ETs fight the vicissitudes of onerous space travel to get here, and keep coming back, what is the motivation? Such activity would be as mindless as the ubiquitous travels of Earth’s retirees who think they have to see, again and again, the mountains and seashores of Earth before they pass on. To what purpose or avail?

Earth is a planet of ongoing and insurmountable insanity and ignorance. Would a truly advanced ET civilization persist in visiting such a place.

When I was ensconced in abnormal psychologies, I, along with my fellow students, including my pal, at the time, Wayne Dyer, often visited local hospitals for the mentally disturbed – Eloise, or Wayne County General in Detroit. We found the visits disturbing and quite awful, hoping not to revisit as often as our professors liked us to.

This is how one would see an advanced civilization addressing a visit to Earth: a one-time occasion, full of gasps and incredulity especially if such visits occurred during times of human stress: wars, serious plagues, the Holocaust, et cetera, et cetera.

No, buddies of mine here. Extraterrestrials, alien visitors are not coming to Earth – well, maybe once around 10,000 years ago as Carl Sagan suggested – but not as often or in such numbers as we see via UFO reportage, as Jacques Vallee tells us.

They just aren’t. And if you continue to believe that ETs are here, among us, or visiting as often as some oddballs keep insisting, get yourself to a psychiatrist. You really need help, of a serious kind.

  • I'd like to think Carl Sagan had it right in "Contact," where if we ever meet aliens then it'll be on their terms, on their invite, and in their neck of the woods. No reason to come here when there are more important things to concern them (like filling up space around Sagittarius). But even Sagan had them thinking Earth-folk were interesting in their own way, if for nothing more than the content of their dreams. This is one time I hate agreeing with you, Rich.

There are elements of the ultra-dimensional or time traveler theories that are even more interesting than ET.

You know I'm in total agreement with you on that Ronald.

  • I guess after reading your comment Rich, You've been in too many bad places:) (Beauty) or lack of it, Lies in the eye of the beholder.

This world, in some places, is a beautiful world my friend, and you need to believe this...

You know, I'm surprised that you even think like this, given, that it is you, that talks about UFO/UAP reports!?

If just one or more UFO reports are true, that you, or anyone, can except as being true, then where do you, or anyone else, think these things come from?

You have said in a previous comment,on this Blog, that the majority of UFO sightings were seen by "normal people" and what does that tell us!??

What it tells us, is that "normal people" have seen something, called a UFO/UAP and is true, what they had seen, even the ones up close..

Up close, would be "undeniably true" what they had seen..

Next question that would be on ones mind, if these reports are excepted..

Where would they come from, if not from elsewhere, or from somewhere here on earth!?

Of course, we don't know this!! There is a lot yet, to be discovered and understood about the universe, and not as clear cut, as you would have us believe, for the simple reasoning, that UFO have been seen here on earth, by normal people that ask the question; Where do they come from, if not from out there somewhere, or here on earth.

Multiple witnesses at that, how can one ignore that?.........?

  • -> ultra-dimensional or time traveler theories<-

The problem here is, no evidence for either of those theories, "Only but a theory" and I have thought about it,but of course, that doesn't mean it's not possible, just no evidence for either:)........

  • I couldn't agree more. I've been saying for years: "It's anthropomorphic to think that we are special enough to attract the attention of a space-faring race to this violent, misogynistic, tribal planet." What makes this planet special is the wondrous biodiversity that we humans are rapidly rendering extinct. But that's a different subject...sort of...

  • And an advanced civilization, Chris, would be, I hope, wise enough to ignore such a brutish example as Earth displays.....or destroy, much as we destroy termites, a wily, interesting species but one that we've decided are not supplementary to our existence in any significant way.

  • But Daniel, isn't the ET proposition a kind of theory itself, an interesting one, flawed by astronomic realities?

  • "There are elements of the ultra-dimensional or time traveler theories that are even more interesting than ET."

Not just "more interesting than ET" to me -I believe they/it are the same the only difference is the mode of travel.

Thinking ahead, the upcoming computer Singularity could resolve all this. We could even become the ETs.

  • Daniel:

I'm preparing an hypothesis you might find interesting (or wanting).

The ET proposal is fraught with too many restrictions to be taken seriously (but I admit, other propositions are little better, just within the realm of possibility. a bit more than the ET scenario).

If life is found by us, (Earth) On another Planet, then for all intensional purposes,-WE- would be be seen as the Hahaha!:) ETs visiting that planet:)...It's early days still, and WHO visited WHO, "first"!?........?

  • There is one thing that has to be done to make the ET hypothesis at all workable given the data on UFOs and "aliens." And that is to draw a hard line between most of the "close encounters" and virtually all of the "abductions" on the one hand and the UFO sightings and radar returns etc on the other. The former are continuous with accounts of dealings with demons and "fairies" and all that going back centuries. This isn't even disputable as far as I know. (Read the Thomas Bullard paper "UFO Abduction Reports: The Supernatural Kidnap Narrative Returns in Technological Guise.")

This approach of drawing such a hard line is taken by Jerome Clark. He seems to think abductions and close encounters and the rest are "paranormal" but that UFOs captured on radar and other instruments (or otherwise leaving physical evidence) are ET.

Unfortunately that line-drawing exercise looks pretty artificial to me. It's not as if UFOs don't have the same sorts of antecedents. It doesn't take long to remember the airships and foo fighters and all the weird aerial things that came before them.

I don't think any of the basically "technological" explanations of UFOs are right. (That includes ETs and time travelers and dimension hoppers.) The phenomenon is "metaphysical."

  • Martin:

We are flying in the same airplane: UFOs being "metaphysical" falls into my pending thesis about what they are and their source.

I'll be back with that sooner than later.

  • I forgot to mention this: a major reason I can't take the ET stuff seriously is that the ETist world reeks of the sort of ridiculousness that seems uniquely associated with those things sustained mostly by intel community disinfo. Just look at the Roswell pushers. I rest my case.

Also I wanted to highlight this: "If one assumes that ET believers think the galaxy and/or cosmos is flush with alien civilizations, how is it that Earth then becomes a standout? What makes it so?"

I think you've got a very good argument there. It sets up a dilemma for the ETist. If the universe is full of planets with intelligent life why would aliens care about Earth out of so many worlds and come by so often? If the universe isn't so full of intelligent life how likely is it that any of it would develop "sci-fi" tech and manage to make it here? Let alone the huge number of ET types suggested by the great variety of "crafts" and humanoids.

  • I think we are all missing the invisible elephant in the room. When it finally deems to show itself, we will all slap our forehead and say, " Of course, I can't believe I never thought about it that way. "

  • Wehave provided an expanded reprint of the Scully book Behind The Flying Saucers which is available on Amazon..it still is a great story.
